Intradermal Nevi

Introduction

Intradermal nevi1 are benign, slightly raised, skin-colored, pink, tan, or brown papules, rare on the vulva and more common on the buttocks, inner thighs or around the mons pubis.

Epidemiology

Unknown.

Etiology

A benign tumor of the melanocytes, intradermal nevi are present in the cells of the dermis alone.

Symptoms and clinical features

Non-tender unless irritated by clothing; usually just noticed by the patient. They appear as soft or firm, raised, often dome-shaped, smooth, non-tender papules.

Pathology/Laboratory Findings

Biopsy is not usually necessary but will clarify if needed.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is by appearance alone. They are usually small (.5-15mm in size).

Treatment/management

None necessary. May be removed by shaving or excision if desired by the patient.
